Crunchyroll: More Fans Watch Anime Unsubbed Than Subbed

Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini recently revealed that 48% of UK fans on the platform stream their anime with subtitles, adding that this is more than anywhere else in the world (via C21 Media). Therefore, as with the UK, every market sees more fans watching anime without subtitles, such as dubbed or raw (Japanese dub) formats.

Purini also revealed that UK subscribers streamed over 5.5 billion hours of anime content and the region was now among its top 10 markets globally; North America, Latin America, Western Europe, Brazil, and India also feature. “The UK’s fandom is relatively nascent compared to other markets we’re in, with most fans having ed in the last three to five years.” He later added, “Since anime is rooted in Japan, localisation has always been key and we are investing in dubs and making anime feel right at home for our fans worldwide.

Purini added that UK subscribers most frequently watch anime on Sunday, which s for 17% of all weekly viewing. Sundays were again revealed to be a popular day for Crunchyroll s globally in another recent interview; marketing director Roberta Fraissat shared that 85% of its subscribers are Gen Y and Gen Z, and “More than half of them watch anime during the week; their favorite time is Sunday at 9 p.m.

Crunchyroll’s recent UK activities include adding its app to Sky Stream and Sky Glass (per activations for Ani-May.
