Production I.G is returning to animate the movie, after also working on the TV anime adaptation of the Haikyu (stylized as Haikyu!!) series. The first season aired in 2014, followed by the sequel which started in the Fall of 2015 and finished during the Winter of 2016, after 25 episodes. Season 3, titled Haikyu!! Karasuno High School vs Shiratorizawa Academy had 10 episodes that aired throughout the Fall of 2016. Haikyu!! Riku vs Kuu OVA serves as its sequel. The latest installment of the anime Haikyuu!! To the Top aired in two cours – first in Winter 2020 and second in Fall 2020. In addition to the TV anime, the franchise also spawned multiple recap movies, OVAs, side stories, and an omake.
Haikyu is based on a manga by Haruichi Furudate which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 to 2020. The manga ended after 405 chapters, compiled into 45 volumes. Viz Media licensed it in English and describes the plot as:
