“I’ve been pouring my whole body and soul into drawing Kinnikuman for 44 years, but 2 and a half years ago, my right knee started screaming from long years of desk work and martial arts training. I endured it, but going up and down stairs became difficult, and I couldn’t work without pain medication. I don’t know how much better it will get, but I’ll do my best with surgery. While I’m resting, a Kinnikuman spin-off will run, so please look forward to it. #Sorrytoallthereaders.“
The editorial department of the magazine Kinnikuman is published in, Weekly Playboy, also posted a statement on Shimada’s behalf, stating that it’s unclear when the serialization will resume. While Shimada is away, short manga based on the 22nd light novel from the Deep of Muscle!! Kinnikuman: Real Novels series will run.
After Shimada’s statement, messages of from fans and colleagues poured in, including Hirotaka Marufuji, who worked alongside Shimada on the Kinnikuman anime: “Shimada sensei! I’m rooting for you with all my might!! I’m praying for your recovery. Do your best with the surgery!“
Chihiro Nakajima, one of the top kickboxers in the world, also posted: “Shimada-sensei, please overcome this with your immense strength and willpower! All Kinnikuman fans are praying for your recovery!“
Keiji Muto, considered one of the greatest wrestlers ever: “I’m praying for your successful surgery! I’m looking forward to the day we can see you again.“
Together with artist Yoshinori Nakai, Shimada forms the famous mangaka duo Yudetamago responsible for the Kinnikuman manga. Kinnikuman was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 1979 to 1987 before the revival of manga in 2011 which is currently being published in Weekly Playboy magazine. The manga inspired multiple spinoffs, anime series, and a bestselling line of action figures and merchandise, and is credited with increasing the popularity of wrestling in Japan. Kinnikuman is one of the most popular manga ever, with over 77mn copies in circulation.
