The anime will adapt the light novel series written by Shinogi Kazanami and illustrated by Makai no Juumin (Volumes 1-9), KeG (Volumes 10-11), and Banpai Akira (Volume12-onwards). The light novel currently has 21 volumes out, while the manga adaptation with art by Yoshiyuki Miwa is currently on its 13th volume. The title of the series is stylized as THE NEW GATE.
One Peace Books licensed the manga in English, describing the plot of the first volume as:
THE NEW GATE—an online game transformed into a life-and-death struggle for its players.
